Hello

Bon dimanche!

Hello, dear workers on my exercise ...

Some of your first answers have given me a headache ... and a lot of work, searching many sites and asking for opinions from everywhere ... I now have my answers, and their possible explanations, (which I'll share with you at the correction) but as I don't want to give you that same headache , I have slightly changed the possibilities offered to you !
Have a good day !

Hello!

D'après mes recherches, "it is" semble être plutôt - marrant que ça ne soit pas l'inverse - et plus utilisé de nos jours que "it has been".
"It has been" est plus ancien et plus "correct" grammaticalement, cependant.
Pourtant, les avis divergent ...
Personnellement j'utilise "it is".
Toutefois, pour insister sur la durée ou pour dire que c'est over now, j'utilise "it has been" :
It has been such a long time since you left the house but you are here now!
It has been ages since I drank my first beer.
See you!

Hello, you all !
From now on, if I have enough time, I'll give one clue a day !

9th and 10th sentences : You don't have to give the 2 possibilities ... It's an 'either .... OR .....' (someone saying the first sentence, will normally not say the second one ... or vice versa !

You're doing well !

Hello lemagemasque

You are correct, "it is", when speaking about the past, is much more common in than in . I hear this sometimes in news reports from BBC. I think it's similar to your "historic present" in French and may be what it derived from. Therefore, it is 20 years since she died would be acceptable in but rare in .

hello notrepere !
I had reached the same paradoxical conclusion as lemasque ... (but, a proof, if needed, that American isn't less pure than BrE ! )
Yet, I have been given real approvals for this form by Americans (from all over the US)and found quite a large number of sentences on COCA ... Yes, language is evolving and not always as we expected it ...
Have a good (errrr ....) day ! Bedtime here ... quick ...

Hello icare

1)It was the first time he had met such an attractive woman !
Never before had he met such an attractive woman
Lorsqu’un terme négatif (never, not only, no sooner, nowhere), restrictif (ou semi négatif: hardly, only, seldom, little) ou intensif (often, well) est mis en relief en tête de phrase dans un style soigné, il faut faire une inversion du sujet.

2)This museum was fantastic ! it’s a pity Rebecca couldn’t come with us !
I wish Rebecca could have come with us. (Possibilité qui ne s’est pas réalisée) L’OLD in “usage notes” donne :
“’Could have’ is used when you are saying that it was possible for somebody to do something in the past but they did not try:I could have won the game but decided to let her win.”(Ici, la notion d’essai non tenté me gêne un peu, mais bon ...)
You use 'was/were able to or manage (but not could) when you are saying that something was possible on a particular occasion in the past:I was able to/managed to find some useful books in the library. I could find some useful books in the library. In negative sentences, could not can also be used:We weren’t able to/didn’t manage to/couldn’t get there in time

I wish Rebecca had been able to come with us (style écrit BrE – certains y voient une ‘intervention extérieure'.

3)It’s not necessary for you to ask for permission ! (3 different sentences! )
You don’t have to ask for permission
You don’t need to ask for permission
You needn’t ask for permission

4) This book is too long !
This is such a long book !/This is too long a book!
'SO et too' + adj (he’s so brilliant! She’s so cute! ) such + determinant + adjective + Nom. Pour mettre un nom après’ too’, il faut employer la forme ‘surprenante’ et donc peu courante,‘too big a book’, ‘too difficult an exercice’.

5) The customs officer made them open their cases!
They were made to open their cases at the customs.
to make someone DO something devient au passif to be made TO DO something. = passif des structures causatives en “make”(BR) ou “have”(US)

6)I’d prefer not to inform my parents about this choice, if you don’t mind ….
I’d rather my parents weren’t informed, if you don’t mind !
I’d rather (je préfèrerais) + infinitif SANS TO : I’d rather + intervention d’une autre personne + prétérit modal indiquant l’irréel, ici, le verbe à la voix passive est nécessaire.

7) Shakespeare didn’t write all these poems . That’s impossible !
Shakespeare can’t have written all these poems !
Impossibilité passée = can’t have written.

8)It’s a pity you didn’t bring your CD player.
You should have brought your CD player…Il est dommage que = regret => "conseil au passé"

9) I last phoned Jimmy a week ago.
It’s a week since I last phoned Jimmy OR It's been a week since I last phoned Jimmy.

10 ) She’s been dead for 20 years now !
It is 20 years since she died.OR It's been 20 years since she died.
