Exercise 46/Stay hungry
Message de here4u posté le 27-06-2015 à 14:20:31 (S | E | F)
Hello,
Exercise 46: 'Stay Hungry!'
The individual corrections are still on the way... (colouring them is a long job ...though lemagemasque suggested several methods to save time, I'm not good enough at computing to be able to do that... Please excuse the remaining parentheses... I'm really doing as well as I can...)

Well! This one is the last 'ordinary' all-serious exercise before I start varied exercises for the summer.('as we did last year'). Don't be scared, I've heard you and will still give the major part to 'thème' (from French to English!).
I know you found the last exercises difficult... and though I've tried to make them easier in the last few weeks, this one is, once again, a I know you like them!
The collective correction will be online on Saturday, July 11th. I hope you'll enjoy it! Thanks for your good work and your interest !

1) Translate into English :

2) Translate into French :
“ It was the summer that men first walked on the moon. I was very young back then, but I didn't believe there would ever be a future. I wanted to live dangerously, to push myself as far as I could go, and then, see what happened to me when I got there. As it turned out, I didn't make it. Little by little, I saw my money dwindle to zero ; I lost my apartment ; I wound up living in the streets. If not for a girl named Kitty Wu, I probably would have starved to death. “

Hello Here4u,
Hello everybody
If it continues I will starve to death!
It’s OK for me (for sure this time).

I) Translate into English:
1) Obviously he was very angry with his brother. He stammered, blushed and left, slamming the door…
2) Why did you have your hair cut? It looks pretty and longer it is more I find you attractive…
3) What I am sure is that she will never apologize for the evil she made to me and to my whole family.
4) He should be working instead of chatting like that with his colleagues…How much time he wastes!
5) There are too few people in this room. Make fifty more people come up, and hurry…
6) Argue with her, I, I can’t do it! Nevertheless, it’s impossible she gives up such a job! Make her listen to reason…
7) We can’t decide everything for her…She has to make choices, then to face the consequences…
8) Look, it’s strange, there are far fewer guests than expected…Are you sure you sent the invites?
9) Unlike his brothers, he thought he would never get his father’s approval for leaving the family business.
10) She went out of the class room shuffling her feet and while sobbing, yelled she wouldn’t come back!

Thank you again for this exercise
"Stay hungry", it'll sharpen our brain

2. Why had you your hair cut , it is very wonderful and the longer it is the more to my liking it is .
3 What I am by far certain, she will never apologize to me and my relative for having hurt us so much.
4. He should be studying instead of chattering like that with his colleagues. What wasted time!
5. They are far fewer people into this room. Make fiftymore persons go up and act quickly
6. Reason with her, I can’t do it However it is impossible that she will give up such a job, make herself see raison.

10. She left the classroom dragging her feet then screaming with a sob she said that she would never come back there.

Here is my tranlation (on Tuesday,30th)

Do you mind correcting my 46th exercise,? Thank you very much.Have a nice day.

Hello here4u, and everyone here;
This is my try, I find the English version easier than the last one . For the first sentences, some of them have posed been a little problem, but I hope I am not too far from the real sense. Thanks to have proposed us these interesting phrases.

1. It was perfectly obvious that he was really angry with his brother. He stuttered, blushed, and He slammed the door as he went out.
2. Why have you made your hair cut ? It is so beautiful, and the more it is long, the more I find you attractive.
3. I am quite sure that she'll never apologize for the suffering she has caused to me and my whole family.
4. He should be working instead of chattering with his colleagues;... what time lost !
5. There is too few people in this room. Ask to fifty other people to come up here, and hurry up !
6. Try to reason out with her, me, I don't manage ! It is absolutely impossible she gave up such a job ! Try to make her seeing sense.
7. We can't decide about everything, for her.... She must make her own choices, and she must assume the results.
8. Well, that's strange, there are much less guests than expected, Are you sure you have sent all the invitations ?
9. Unlike his brothers, He thought that he could never get his father's authorization for leaving the family company.
10. She dragged the feet leaving the classroom, and while sobbing, she shouted she would never come again.

Thanks to give me until July 8th to try to find do better.
After, it's OK for your welcome correction.
Thanks a lot.

Hello Here4U
Once again, I really appreciated this exercise Thanks a lot ! I've finished my try and I'm looking forward to the next one!
I)
1) Obviously, he was very cross with his brother. He stammered, blushed, and stormed out of the room.
2) Why have you had (*) your hair cut ? It's beautiful and the longer it is, the more I like it... (*) I initially wrote "Why did you have" but I think the present perfect is better here.
3) What I'm sure of is that she'll never apologize for the harm she has caused me and my whole family...
4) He should be working instead of chatting with his colleagues like that ... What a waste of time !
5) This room is filled with too few people. Now, have fifty more people move up into it at once ! (Oops, I had made a typo there ... Sorry about that )
6) Try and reason with her, will you ? I can't do it myself. Yet, it is impossible for her to leave such a post ! Make her see reason...
7) It's not for us to decide on everything for her... She needs to make her own choices, then assume the consequences thereof...
8) Well, that's weird, far fewer guests than expected have come... Are you sure you sent out the invitations ?
9) unlike his brothers, he thought he'd never gain his father's permission to leave the family-owned business.
10) She shuffled out of the classroom and sobbing, yelled she wouldn't come back !
II)

Hello!
Always a pleasure to do these exercises (but being soon on holidays I'm afraid I would have less and less time to think about them). I'm looking forward to the corrections

1) Translate into English :
1)He was obviously very angry with his brother. He stammered, went red and slammed the door on his way out
2)Why have you had your hair cut ? It is fine and the longer it is, the more attractive I find you...
3)What I am sure about is that she will never apologize for the harm she has done to me and to my whole family...
4)He should be working instead of chatting that way with his colleagues... What a waste of time !
5)There are too few people in this room. Have fifty more persons come upstairs, and be quick...
6)Reason with her, I can't manage it ! She can't yet give up such a post ! Make her see reason...
7)We can't decide everything for her... She has to make her own choices and then accept the consequences...
8)It is strange, isn't it, there are far less guests than expected... Are you sure of having sent all the invitations ?
9)Unlike his brothers, he thought that he would never get his father's permission to leave the family firm.
10)She shuffled out of the class and while sobbing she screamed that she would not come back !

Wishing you a less busy week, dear Here4u! Thank you again.

Hello here4u
Always an interesting exercise, and many possible translations, it's tricky sometimes to decide on what fits the best. Thank you a lot for this brainstorming, hoping not give you too much work.
Here is my try.

1) Translate into English :
Evidently, he was very angry with his brother. He stammered, flushed and went out slamming the door...

Why have you had your hair cut? It is beautiful and the longer, the more appealing I find you.

What I am sure about, is she'll never ask me and my all family for forgiveness, as regards the harm she has done...

He should be working instead of chatting that way with his colleagues...
What a waste of time!

There are too few people in this room. Have fifty more people come up, and quickly...

Reason with her, I can't get it! It's yet impossible she gave up such a position! See her reason...

We can't make our mind up for her on everything. She must make her choices, then take responsibility for the consequences...

Well, that's so weird. There are far less guests than expected...are you sure the invitations have been sent out?

Unlike his brothers, he thought his father would never grant him the permission to leave the family business.

She shuffled out of the classroom and while sobbing, yelled she wouldn't come back!

Paul Auster, Moon Palace
1989.Faber & Faber

Dear here4u,
for the individual correction. I have just finished to correct my try, according to your advice. Fortunately, using "rechercher sur le site", I have found the test n°105563 which (and not witch, as I had written first ) has helped me too, I was a little lost with "faire faire"

Now, I am going to sleep, and I will wait impatiently for the collective correction. Maybe I am going to dream about this exercise, I just hope it won't be a nightmare !!!!
Have a sweet night
Friendly,
Chrys

Hello! Exercise 46 : here's the correction.

Congrats again to all of you!

1) Translate into English :

He was obviously very angry with his brother. He stammered, blushed, and left the room, slamming the door.

- ê en colère contre = to be angry with sby. Attention : le nom est ‘anger’. (ê= être, bien sûr! )
- bégayer = to stammer (plutôt quand on hésite), to stutter = plutôt défaut de prononciation.
- to slam the door = claquer la porte.

Why have you had your hair cut? It’s beautiful and the longer it is, the more attractive I think you are.

- Se faire couper les cheveux = to have one’s hair cut ; ‘make’ sous- entend une contrainte = I make you work…
- Attention, ‘hair’ est indénombrable singulier. ‘What colour’s your hair? It’s brown.’

What I’m sure of, is that she’ll never apologize for the harm she’s done to me and to my whole family.

- to be sure of stg/about stg ; ici, préférer ‘of’ à cause de son rejet en fin de phrase.
- demander pardon = s’excuser = to apologize to sby for stg
- le bien, le mal = todo good and to do harm, ici déterminé => the harm she’s done to me ; également : wrong /right et good/ evil avec de légères nuances à chaque fois.
- toute ma famille = ma famille entière = my whole family.

He should be working instead of chatting like this with his work-pals. It’s such a waste of time!

- la forme en –ing s’imposait.
- instead of + ing = au lieu de
- Perdre du temps = to waste time => a waste of time.

There are too few people in this room. Ask fifty more persons to go up, and please, do hurry!

- Faites monter : si vous utilisez ‘make 50 people go up’, vous imposez une contrainte contenue dans 'make'. ‘have 50 people go up’ = neutre ; et j’ai choisi la persuasion et la gentillesse ‘ask 50 people to go up’

Reason with her, will you ? I can’t ! Yet, she can’t give up such a good job ! Bring her to her senses!

A l’oral, on accentue le ‘I’.
- it’s impossible for her to give up/she shouldn’t give up…

We can’t decide (on) everything for her. She has to make her own choices and then, take responsibilities for the consequences.

- faire un choix = to MAKE a choice; faire ses choix = to make one’s own choices.
- assumer les conséquences = to take responsibilities for consequences/to pay the piper.
Attention ! to assume = faux ami ! = supposer.

Well! That’s strange! There are far fewer guests than expected… Are you sure you’ve had the invitations sent out?

- That ‘s strange= that’s weird;
- guests = invités = nom dénombrable pluriel => 'many' bcp = ou 'few' = peu de ; beaucoup moins de => 'far fewer' + N dénombrable pluriel + than …
- expected = ici, planned
- j’ai eu envie de mettre un passif : have the invitations sent out = to have something done.

Unlike his brothers, he thought he would never get his father’s permission to leave the family business.

- Unlike = contrary to
- Phrase au passé => he would never get …
- the family business = nom composé.

She shuffled out of the classroom sobbing, and yelled she would never come back!

- traîner les pieds = ‘to shuffle’= le moyen de sortir ; ‘out of the class’ = le résultat ! : elle est sortie de la classe. = résultative.
- sangloter = to sob
- hurler = to howl = to yell

2) Translate into French :

“ It was the summer that men first walked on the moon. I was very young back then, but I didn't believe there would ever be a future. I wanted to live dangerously, to push myself as far as I could go, and then, see what happened to me when I got there. As it turned out, I didn't make it. Little by little, I saw my money dwindle to zero ; I lost my apartment ; I wound up living in the streets. If not for a girl named Kitty Wu, I probably would have starved to death. “
Paul Auster, Moon Palace

(1) = the summer that = the summer when => où.
(2) = ‘men first walked’ = marché … pour la première fois.
(3) = back then => retour vers le passé => ‘alors’
(6) ‘If not for’ = if it weren’t for = if there hadn’t been …

Encore BRAVO !
