Ex 90/get better and better
Message de here4u posté le 29-09-2016 à 15:08:17 (S | E | F)
Hello Dear Friends, Lovers of English! (and future ones, just step in!)
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

I) Translate into English:
2) « Me calmer ! C’est plus facile à dire qu’à faire … et avec ce qu’elle a fait, ce n’est pas à moi de réagir, mais à toi ! »

II) Translate into French:
She took the package half-unwillingly, and thanked him. Helen carried it awkwardly the rest of the way home, neither of them saying much. She had been caught by surprise. If she had given herself a minute to think, she would have refused it on grounds that it was wise just to stay friends; because, she thought, neither of them really knew the other. But once she had the thing in her hands she didn’t have the nerve to ask him to take it back. It was a medium-sized box of some sort with something heavy in it – she guessed a book; yet it seemed too big for a book. As she held it against her breast, she felt a throb of desire for Frank and this disturbed her. About a block from the grocery, nervously saying good night, she went on ahead. This was how they parted when the store window was still lit.
Bernard MALAMUD, The Assistant.

III) Rephrase the following sentences using the prompts:
a) He didn’t feel proud. On the contrary, he was feeling humiliated.
- Instead ….
b) I don’t want you out of home before you’ve finished your homework.
- I want you to stay home ……………………….
c) He came back only because his Mom insisted.
- If …

Good luck... and don't forget THE FORCE...

Don't you see that I'm in real trouble.

He was such a nice boy! If you could see how he talks to me now!You should have seen the way he stood up to me to defend his fiancée the day before yesterday!
He has changed a lot!I don't recognise him anymore...

Maxwell 5)

Maxwell

II) Translate into French:
She took the package half-unwillingly, and thanked him. Helen carried it awkwardly the rest of the way home, neither of them saying much. She had been caught by surprise. If she had given herself a minute to think, she would have refused it on grounds that it was wise just to stay friends; because, she thought, neither of them really knew the other. This was how they parted when the store window was still lit.
Bernard MALAMUD, The Assistant.

b) I don’t want you out of home before you’ve finished your homework.
- I want you to stay home ……………………….
I want you to stay home until you finish your homework.

c) He came back only because his Mom insisted.
- If …
If his Mom hadn't insisted he wouldn't have come back.

He spoke on behalf of the company, not only to thank the managing director for his contribution to the financial recovery of the group and to wish him every success in his new responsibilities, but also to extend a warm welcome to the new director who is picking up the torch in two weeks.

2 – To calm myself down ! Easier said than done… and with what she’s done it’s up to you to react not to me
3 – What has been done can’t be erased and you’d better think it over twice before making this decision
4 – He was such a nice little boy ! You should see how he talks to me now ! You should have seen how he stood up to me yesterday to support his fiancée ! He’s changed a lot ! I can’t recognize him !
5 – He spoke for the company, to thank the general manager for contributing to the financial recovery of the group and to wish him a complete success in his new duties but also to welcome warmly the new company director who will take up the torch within two weeks

II – Into French
She took the package half-unwillingly and thanked him. Helen carried it awkwardly the rest of the way home, neither of them saying much. She had been aught by surprise. If she had given herself a minute to think, she would have refused it on grounds that it was wise just to stay friends, because she thought neither of them really knew the other. But, once she had the thing in hands, she did not have the nerve to ask him to take it back. It was a medium-sized box of some sort with something heavy in it – she guessed a book ; yet it seemed too big for a book. As she held it against her breast, she felt a throb of desire for Franck and this disturbed her. About a block from the grocery, nervously saying good night, she went on ahead. This was how they parted when the store window was still lit.

III – Rephrase
a – Instead of feeling proud, he was feeling humiliated
b – I want you to stay home until you’ve finished your homework

Thank u again Here4u. (I found that the English text was a bit strange so difficult to put in good French...)

hello Maya, and dear others...

You're right! and I had warned you... This exercise is relatively short (compared to those you had in the summer...) but not easy at all... It's a well-deserved 3-star one! I know that quite a number of you are still working on it, and you still have plenty of time... (5 days), but I'll start sending the individual corrections tomorrow or on Thursday!
you're GReeeaaat!

I) Translate into English:

a) Can’t you see what a bind I'm in? Don’t lay it on thick and give me a break!
b) Can’t you see what a mess I'm in? Don’t rub it in and leave me alone!

- Être dans le pétrin = to be in a mess/ in a bind/ in a hole/ in a tight spot/ in the soup/ in a jam/ in a pickle/ in hot water/ in a fix/ in a sticky situation/
- N’en rajoute pas ! = Don’t lay it on thick/ rub it in/ make things worse/
- Laisse-moi tranquille = Leave me alone/ get off my back/ get off my case/ lay off me/ give me a break/ give me some space/ cut me some slack/

2) « Me calmer ! C’est plus facile à dire qu’à faire … et avec ce qu’elle a fait, ce n’est pas à moi de réagir, mais à toi ! »

Calm myself down!/ Cool off!/ It’s easier said than done… and with what she did, I don’t have to react, but you do !

- it’s more easily said than done/it’s easier said than done/
- réagir = to react/ to sit up/

You can’t unring the bell, and you’d better think twice before making this decision.

- What has been done can't be undone/ you can’t undo what has been done; j'ai entendu cette expression dans une conversation entre Américains.
- Tu ferais mieux de = You’d better = you HAD better (Bien revoir le test N° 109627)
- Prendre une décision = to make a decision

He was such a kind kid! You should hear how he speaks to me now! You should have seen how he held his own against me the day before yesterday in order to defend his fiancée! Indeed, he has changed! /he did change!/ I can’t recognise him any longer/ I can no longer recognise him…

- Révision such/so N° 111002.
- tenir tête à quelqu’un : stand up to somebody/ hold your own/ hold your own against someone
- ne…. plus: lorsqu’il s’agit de temps (et non de quantité) préférer « not … any longer/no longer »= temps à « not …any more/no more » = quantité ; N° 112379.

Maxwell... but you were hard on us...

He spoke on behalf of the company, in order to thank the managing director for contributing to the financial recovery of the group and wish him great success starting his new job, but also to give a warm welcome to the new manager who will pick up the torch within a fortnight.

- directeur general= managing director/ general manager/
- redressement = improvement/ recovery/ straightening up/ adjustment/
- entrer en fonction: take up a post/ start a new job| start work/
- reprendre le flambeau: take over from/ pick up the torch/

L’Assistant.

- half-unwillingly= Presque de mauvais gré/ presque à contre cœur/
- The rest of the way home= jusqu’à la maison/ jusque chez elle
- She didn’t have the nerve= le courage/ l’audace/ le cran/ le culot
- to be willing to= être disposé à (reconnaitre la racine “will” = volonté) ; le contraire = to be unwilling to = to be reluctant = être réticent.

III) Rephrase the following sentences using the prompts:

a) He didn’t feel proud. On the contrary, he was feeling humiliated.
- Instead OF FEELING PROUD, HE WAS FEELING HUMILIATED;

b) I don’t want you out of home before you’ve finished your homework.
- I want you to stay home UNTIL YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR HOMEWORK;

c) He came back only because his Mom insisted.
- If HIS MOM HADN’T INSISTED, HE WOULDN’T HAVE COME BACK.
