Ex.91/not that easy… take care!

Hello, dear friends, hard workers and Lovers of English…

I. Translate into English:

II. Translate into French:
Helen shivered a little as she unwrapped the box on her bed, ready to hide it the minute she heard a footstep on the stairs. Lifting the carton lid, she found two packages in it, each wrapped in white tissue paper and tied with red ribbons with uneven bows, obviously by Frank. When she had untied the first present, Helen gasped at the sight of a long, hand-woven scarf - rich black wool interlaced with gold thread. She was startled to discover that the second present was a red leather copy of Shakespeare's plays. There was no card.
She sat weakly down on the bed. I can't, she told herself...
Bernard Malamud, The Assistant.

III. Rephrase the sentences, using the prompts and keeping the same meanings to the sentences.
a) I said I wouldn't go out if you didn't stay with me. (Direct speech+ unless)
I said:" ......"
b) They're operating on him and I'm quite worried!
He ...
c) "Where did you get the money from?", he wondered. “It’s none of your business”, she answered.
He wondered .....

Once again, I give you THE FORCE.

She sat weakly down on the bed .I can't , she told herself

Maybe have you become so involved that you Can't find any way out of this issue, and that you are out of desperation.
(it's tearing you apart; it's ripping you up inside).

In spite of having done his utmost to satisfy her, he is wondering what she is up to, for he acknowledges that she is always holding an idea back in her mind.

It took me a lot of time to accomodate what had happened between us. Do accept it too, for that rage of yours will not be of any help to you.

He might have kept repeting that he was skilful in the use of this software, experience has shown that he isn't
up to the challenge. It won't be long before he had likewise lied about his diploma!

Hello Here4u, Hello everybody !
Thank you very much for these new exercises !

I. Into English
1. Maybe are you so involved that you can't see any end to this problem and that's tearing you appart.
2. He did the impossible to satisfy her. However he wonders what she is plotting because he knows she always has an idea in the back of her mind.
3. I had a long time to accept what it had happened between us. Do it also because that anger won't help you.
M.4. I had spent all afternoon long cooking the dinner. Some people pounced on it as the misery on the worl would do it and had eaten like a horse and the other ones had just eaten like a bird. I feel they just have sparrow appeties.
M.5. However hard he tries to repeat that he was experienced in the use of the software, the experience has shown he isn't up to do it. From now he also lied about his diploma, it's only a single step.

Hello HERE4U, and everyone here.

I. Translate into English:
1. Perhaps you are so deeply involved that you are not able to see any way out of this problem, and you are torn by this situation.
2. He has done his utmost to satisfy her. However, he wonders himself about what she is plotting, for he knows her capacity to have something at the back of her mind. (or something in mind )
3. A lot of time has been necessary to accept what happened between us. But you have to do it also, because to be angry is not good, and doesn't help you.

I had spent the whole afternoon preparing this dinner. Some rushed on, like the poverty on the world and ate like a horse, while others merely nibbled. I thought these last ones are simply used to eat like sparrows.

No matter how much he insisted to say that he was experimented in the use of this software, the experience proved that he was not up to it . it might be only one step before we learnt he lied.

Hello dear here4u,
Here is my try, ready to be corrected.

Maybe you're so deeply involved that you can't see any way to solving this problem and that is making you tear apart /tear your hair out.
He did everything possible to satisfy her/to meet her needs. However he's wondering what she could plot, because he knows she always has something up her sleeves
I have had a long time to make me accept what happened between us. Try to do the same way, because being still angry won't help you.

I spent the whole afternoon to get ready that dinner. someone people threw themselves over as misery on the world and ate enough for an army, others just pickled at. It's my impression that the latter ones simply had an appetite of a sparrow.

He may keep saying/repeating that he was skilled in the use of this software; in practice he showed not to be up to the job. Therefore, It's but a short step from here to the fact he could have also lied about his diploma.

c) "Where did you get the money from?", he wondered. “It’s none of your business”, she answered.
He wondered out loud where.she had got the money from..and she answered that it was none of his business.

I hope my results will be so good to deserve your favourable comment, which is the main task I’m aiming at.
Thanking for your demanding exercise, I hope you have a nice Sunday walking along les Champs-Elysées.
So long

Hello!

The "shy ones" are still too shy to step in... Don't forget that the first step is always the hardest one! and that everyone welcomes you here to share the FORCE with them!
Congrats to all of you!

I. Translate into English:

You may be in so deep that you can't see a way out and it's tearing you apart
- Peut-être es-tu = pas d’inversion en anglais = You may be… maybe/ perhaps sont plus "informal".
- être impliqué = to be in/ to be involved/
- tellement = so much (en fin de phrase)
- De solution à ce problème = a solution TO this problem/ issue
– cela te déchire = to tear apart. (to tear, I tore, torn= déchirer)

He went above and beyond to satisfy her. Yet, he's wondering what she's up to because he knows she always has an agenda.
- Faire l’impossible = to do/manage/achieve the impossible/(= un peu "calque") to do one’s best/ to do his utmost/ uttermost/ to go above and beyond/ to go the extra mile
- elle a une idée derrière la tête = to have something in the back of one’s head/ To have something up her sleeve/ To hatch/ to plot/ to have an agenda (qui est devenu très courant et que j'ai préféré).

I've had plenty of time to come to terms with what had happened between us. Do it too because that anger will not help (you).
- accepter = to accept/ to get over = surmonter/ to come to terms with/it was hard to bear/ hard to take/ to swallow.

I had spent the whole afternoon cooking this meal. Some pounced on it as if they had been starving and ate like horses; others only pecked at their food. I can feel that the latter ones simply lacked appetite!
- tout l’après midi =the whole afternoon;
- se jeter sur = to pounce on/ throw themselves on it/to wolf (=> wolfed) one's food down/ gobbled the food down/ he bolted his food/ he stuffed his food down/ he crammed his food into his face
- Manger comme 4 = to eat like a horse
- picorer = to pick at food/ to peck at food/ to nibble/
- the former… the latter = le premier … le dernier ; beaucoup de controverse dans les dictionnaires et Forums sur ces expressions qui selon les sources, se réfèrent (ou non) uniquement à 2 personnes ou choses ; certains élargissent aux groupes et mettent un –s aux deux noms, ce qui en choque d’autres … I played it safe and simply added an indefinite pronoun.
- simply not hungry/simply lacked appetite!/had no appetite/were simply choosy/ ate like.

No matter how much he repeated that he was experienced in the use of this software, experimentation has shown that he was not up to the task/job. From there to imagine that he had also lied about his degree/diploma, is but a small step.
Définitions: -experience = “accumulation of knowledge or skill”; experiment= “A test under controlled conditions that is made to demonstrate a known truth, examine the validity of a hypothesis, or determine the efficacy of something previously untried.” Experiment may be used to test experience...
- he was experienced in/ he had a lot of practise in/ he mastered/ the use of
– être à la hauteur de = to be up to something/ to be equal to something
– il n’y a qu’un pas = is but a small step/ is only one step to be taken/ is only one footstep

= l'Assistant

- even = régulier => uneven = irrégulier
- to gasp = pousser un cri de surprise. (c’est ici la surprise qui domine)
- "I can't" => J'ai choisi d'utiliser un verbe pour mieux exprimer le dilemme d'Helen, mais je l'ai voulu bref et incisif : définitif.

III. Rephrase the sentences, using the prompts and keeping the same meanings to the sentences.
a) I said I wouldn't go out if you didn't stay with me. (Direct speech+ unless)
I said:" I WON'T GO OUT UNLESS YOU STAY WITH ME."= J'ai dit :" Je ne sortirai pas sauf si tu restes avec moi."

b) They're operating on him and I'm quite worried!
He IS BEING OPERATED ON AND I’M QUITE WORRIED...
Ce temps est porté par l’auxiliaire du passif = to be= he’s being).

c) "Where did you get the money from?", he wondered. “It’s none of your business”, she answered.
He wondered WHERE SHE HAD GOT THE MONEY FROM AND SHE ANSWERED THAT IT WAS NONE OF HIS BUSINESS...

. Bon courage pour le 92 !
