We were in London and then, we went over to Manchester.
He swam over to the Houses of Parliament.
He walked over to us and told us about what had happened.
They had to go over to another system.

Such sentences put emphasis on a passage from one place to another, from one system to another.

That was Christian Amanpour reporting from Baghdad, here on CNN. Now let's go over to Bernard Shaw, who's standing by in Amman. Bernard?

hi praliline !

you didn't give us details at all ! how can we help you then ?
anyway, I'm going to explain willy's sentences, maybe they'll help you a bit. (willy, correct in need please ).

- We were in London and then, we went over to Manchester.
*If you mean that you were in London and are going to Manchester : to go to Manchester.

*But if it’s a journalist who is on the air in Manchester, he means that : after seeing a TV report from London, we came back to Manchester.

- He swam over to the Houses of Parliament = he left his last job and now belongs to the Houses of Parliament. ( for swam, maybe it means that he went over his new position easily ).

- He walked over to us and told us about what had happened = he walked towards us.

- They had to go over to another system = they had to check for another system, to review the old one.

well, an advice : when you need such a translation, better post your question in the "forum principal". It'll be easier for you.

waiting for what you really need !

Also praline, you should write : "what does it mean?"
