Hi everybody!
I found a good summary about the auxiliary verbs and tenses.

When be and have are used as auxiliary verbs, they make differents verb forms.

BE
1. Be with verb +-ing is used to make continuous verb forms.
He's washing his hair. (Present Continuous)
They were going to work. (Past Continuous)
I've been learning English for two years. (Present Perfect Continuous)
I'd like to be lying on the beach right now. (Continuous infinitive)

Continuous verb forms describe activities in progress and temporary activities.

2. be with the past participle is used to form the passive.
Paper is made from wood. (Present Simple Passive)
My car was stolen yesterday. (Past Simple Passive)
The house has been redecorated. (Present Perfect Passive)
This homework needs to be done tonight. (Passive infinitive)

Passive sentences move the focus from the subject to the object of activities sentences

HAVE
Have with the past participle is used to make perfect verb forms.
He has worked in seven different countries. (Present Perfect)
She was crying because she had had some bad news. (Past Perfect)
I'd like to have met Napoleon. (Perfect infinitive)

Perfect means 'before', so Present perfect means 'before now, and Past Perfect means 'before a time in the past'

I hope that it can help you ....

That's a good idea Bridg

Complete the sentences with the correct auxiliary verb in the positive or negative form.

1. Computers ------- already revolutionized the way we live and work.
2. We ----- know how much they ----- still changing the world.
3. Only a few years before men ---- walking on the moon, scientists said that it was impossible.
4. How many lives ----- penicillin saved ?
5. A holiday used to mean a day when you ---- work.

Enjoy it !

A l'origine j'avais écrit pour la 3.

Only a few years before men had been walking on the moon, scientists said that it was impossible.

Then i asked to myself the question for knowing if we have to put ourself at that time in 1969.
At the end I told to myself that we still ask now so I write down have.

Joy give me light please. My first idea was good?

Sorry it is an english only forum.

I'm sorry Yannloic, but it isn't ...
Your proposition (had been walking) is a past perfect to express an action before the past.
Only a few years before ..... ==> before 1969
.... men ? walking on the moon ==> in 1969
That means that the second action is after the first one, ok ?
So a past perfect is impossible in this case.

ps: I sent you a MP to explain that in French ... it's so difficult

- only a few years before men were walking...
Thank you . my answer is wright now , isn't it ?

Réponse: re:Auxiliary verbs de joy813, postée le 2004-09-29 18:24:21 (S | E)
Yes Minouche, that's correct !
You used a past continuous (were walking) to express a "background" event, and that was the only possibility in this case.

Thanks to you, Bridg and Yannloic !

ps:wright ==> right
==> Is my answer right ? or : is it correct ?
