Ex 125/ keeping pace
Message de here4u posté le 29-01-2018 à 20:49:06 (S | E | F)
Hello dear Friends!

I give you THE FORCE!

I)Translate into English:

II) Translate into French:

We hauled several fifty-gallon barrels of tar up to the roof and got to work spreading the stuff over the surface with brooms. The sunlight beating down on that flat black roof was brutal, and after half an hour or so I became extremely dizzy, slipped on a patch of wet tar, fell, and somehow knocked over one of the open barrels, which then spilled tar all over me.
When I got back to the office a few minutes later, my father was greatly amused. I realized that the situation was amusing, but I was too embarrassed to want to joke about it. To my father’s credit, he did not get angry at me or make fun of me. He laughed, but in a way that made me laugh too. Then he dropped what he had been doing, took me to the Woolworth’s across the street, and bought me some new clothes. It had suddenly become possible for me to feel close to him.
Paul Auster, The Invention of Solitude.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS: Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy, but MUST remain verbs !), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, scratch your minds and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
(You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!) PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THE COMPULSORY WORDS!
FREEDOM! Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :

(to) HAPPEN – (to) INCLUDE – ROUGH – GRACEFUL - (a) SCHEDULE -(a) MAINTENANCE – THOUGH – DESPITE + un REGRET (avec I WISH….)–

IV) Don’t forget to go and help my poor helpless student on the thread « Rack your brains and help/ 15 », en ligne depuis quelques jours minutes. Thanks a lot! You have THE FORCE.

Whaow! Heres4U for playing and working with words All is clear! OK for correction

I like keeping the pace this way!

DESPITE the fact that I wish the after sales service would have INCLUDED a SCHEDULE for a better optimization of the costs of MAINTENANCE, and THOUGH the ROUGH country steering stabilizers cost a heap of money, the new S.U.V. HAPPENED to be a great deal and even had the GRACEFUL body lines of a luxury Coupé. (50 words)

Hello Here4u,Hello everybody !
There is my try. It’s finished and ready for the correction!

I. Into English
1. Everyone thinks I have everything I need to succeed in this field. Why, don’t you think so? Tell me what concerns you.
2. Teens, oh Dear! Oh yes, I remember very well! So! After being caught in a state of inebriation, we could think he would watch one’s step but not even! He should understand that’s a serious situation and stop provoking us.
3. M: Different sources have confirmed the holding of discussions about the purchase of this company but these ones would still be in an embryonic stage, the contours of these hypothetical transactions remaining confused. The market consolidation is well and truly in progress.
4. M: That’s not bad! I’m working relentlessly here and you don’t stop criticizing! I’ll tell you: you’re an ungrateful.

II. En français

Thank you very much ! Have a nice Sunday !

Different sources have ascertained that discutions are going to be held aiming at the take-over of that company, but these ones
might still be on preliminary stages whose outlines are remaining blurred. The market consolidation is indeed ongoing.

What happened ? he just forgot to include in his check the maintenance work I did, as though I didn't tell him again yesterday ; he is a boss too rough, and despite my new schedule that I prefer, I wish I were able to tell him what I think about his graceful side ! 51

Et soudainement me devint possible de me sentir proche a lui.

Hello Here4u,
I am sorry to be in late but I was very busy this last time.
Thanks for your exercices ; it's always a real pleasure to do them.

Then he dropped what he had been doing, took me to the Woolworth’s across the street, and bought me some new clothes. It had suddenly become possible for me to feel close to him.

Hello Here4U

Thanks a lot again, it's a real pleasure to translate sentences, and search words and idioms on the internet to improve our English level :-)
We'll see...

I) Translate into English:
"Everyone thinks I've got all that it takes to succeed in this area... Why don't you think so? Tell me what's worrying you."
("You" en italique souligné.

"Teens, oh boy! Oh yes, I remember very well! I say, after getting caught driving drunk, you'd think he would stop messing around (*) but far from it! He should understand that this is a serious situation and stop provoking us."
(*) or : would keep his nose clean

Different sources have confirmed that discussions were being held for the purpose of the takeover of this company, but these would still be at an embryonic stage, the outline of these hypothetical transactions remaining unclear. The market consolidation is definitely ongoing.

I like that! I'm working my fingers to the bone around here and you keep on criticizing. I'll tell you this much : you're an ingrate!

To my father's credit, he did not get angry at me or make fun of me. He laughed, but in a way that made me laugh too. Then he dropped what he had been doing, took me to the Woolworth's across the street, and bought me some new clothes. It had suddenly become possible for me to feel close to him.

III) Playing with words:

DESPITE his GRACEFUL smile, the technician HAPPENED to be hours late on SCHEDULE for the boiler MAINTENANCE and talked to me in a ROUGH way as THOUGH it were my mistake : How I WISH I could INCLUDE a penalty clause in my service contract! (44)

Hello dear Here4u and Maxwell ! Thanks for your new exercises...
Hi Everybody !!

Here is my work:
I)Translate into English:
« Everybody thinks that I have everything I need to succeed in this field.. Why you don't think so ? Tell me about what your matter is.»

« Teens, oh dear ! Oh yes, I remember very well ! Well, after being taken as a drunk driving, we could think he would watch his step, but even not ! He should understand that the situation is serious and stop provoking us ! »

Differente sources have confirmed the discussion keeping in readiness for purchase of this company, but they would be still early stage, the outlines of these hypothetic deals being wolly. The market consolidations are well and truly in progress.

This is not bad going! I work relentlessly and you don't stop criticising. I 'm going to tell you «  you are an ingrate »

Hello, Dear Friends,

I)Translate into English:
Everyone thinks I have all it takes to succeed in that field… Why don’t you think so? Tell me what’s worrying you.

-Tout ce qu’il faut = all it takes to…
- Tout ce que = all that = all (that), surtout pas « all what » ; « what » = ce que (mais seul !) What he told me was a lie! » = Ce qu’il m’a dit était un mensonge. »
A l’oral, accentuer le mot => « why don’t you think so? »

«Teenagers, hey! Yeah, I remember all too well! After his DUI/ being arrested for DUI/ you’d think he’d want to stay out of trouble, but not so much... He’s got to understand how serious the situation is and stop pushing our buttons.»

- s’être fait prendre = s’être fait arrêter => after being arrested.
- drink driving (UK)/ drunk driving(US)/ DUI= driving under influence/ drinking and driving
- se tenir à carreau = to watch his step/ to want to stay out of trouble/ to walk the line/ to keep his nose clean/ to stop messing around/
stop + ing = arrêter de faire quelque chose => stop smoking, that makes me cough. // stop to do something. Arrêter POUR FAIRE quelque chose. He’ll have to stop that to go to bed ; it’s extremely late !

Different sources confirmed that discussions were being held to takeover this company; these would still be at an early stage and the terms of these hypothetical transactions/ the details of these potential negociations/ are still unclear/ undefined/ undetermined. Market consolidation is truly underway.
- tenue de discussions : ne pas rester trop mot à mot, ou trop littéral : ceci ne « passe » pas en anglais : le passif est un bon moyen d’exprimer ceci : discussions were being held/ some discussions held/
- « rachat de société » = a takeover/
Lien internet

- les contours des opérations (? ) = les modalités des résolutions ? / = the terms/ limits/ outlines/ details/ of these hypothetical transactions/ of these potential negociations/
- at an early stage/ under-developed/ in an embryonic stage/
- en cours : is truly underway/ is definitely ongoing.

« That takes the cake! I work all the time and you never stop criticising! You know what ? You’re ungrateful… »

- « Ça c'est pas mal ! » ne signifie pas : « it isn’t bad!/ I like that! » mais = C’est la meilleure ! = That's just incredible!/ Well, that takes the biscuit!/ That just beats the band! "Terrific" or "Isn't that just great!" That takes the cake or that takes the prize/ That's the last straw!/
- Travailler d’arrache-pied = to work relentlessly/ work all the time/ work flat out/
- You know what?/ Let me tell you: You’re an ungrateful person…/ You’re ungrateful!

(« It had suddenly become possible for me to feel close to him.

Paul Auster, The Invention of Solitude.

Lien internet

(1) a gallon = 4,5 litres in p:gb , mais 3,8 litres in p:us
(they came into the room with pipes in their mouths and hats on their heads)
