Dear Friends and co-workers,

This time, I must confess... It's a tricky one! (but it's not treacherous...) There are no traps. It's "just plainly difficult"...
I give you THE FORCE, and you'll give me your best, as ever.

I)Translate into English:
(Oh dear! Maxwell, that’s torture! )

II)Translate into French:
What I could offer Lisa wasn’t the conventional haven of maternal love and concern but my mind and my energy. If she hadn’t acquired that genetically then I was quite prepared to show her how to think and act. I was no good at kissing away tears and telling bedtime stories – any mother can do that : my uses were potentially far more significant.
She was a disappointment to me. And I, presumably, to her. I looked for my own alter ego, the querying rebellious maverick child I had been myself; Lisa looked for a reassuring clothes-shopping sherry-drinking figure like the mothers of her school friends. As she grew older I felt more and more her silent stare, each time I visited her at Sotleigh, took her over to Beaminster to stay with my mother, or had her in the flat in London for a couple of days. There, she would wander around, a skimpy pallid little figure standing in doorways or perching on a sofa. I bought her books. I took her to museums and art galleries; I tried to encourage opinion and curiosity. Lisa growing longer of limb and less flexible of mind, became ordinary. She began to bore me. And I sensed her disapproval. I have attracted disapproval all my life. Usually it leaves me indifferent, occasionally it delights me. But the disapproval of a child is oddly unsettling.
Penelope LIVELY, Moon Tiger, 1987.

III) Expression: How would you describe the narrator, as a mother? (No more than 100 words.)
Of course, you don't have to do everything... Each part is a three-star exercise in itself... Do according to your tastes, needs and spare time, of course...

Hello,

READY FOR CORRECTION

I)Translate into English:
- Threatened to be taken down a peg or two, everyone was very clear about it and lay low as they rubbed this chief (up) the right way, so that no one would tempt fate.

- You appeared to have greatly come along in this field, but everybody now knows you were in no way responsible for it... What a huge disappointment coupled with deep bitterness!

» « Hi hi ! C’est drôle ! »
- ‘‘Sandy spent the first couple of days lifting her phone over her head to try to get a signal on the camping site.’’ ‘‘Hi hi! That’s funny!’’

- ‘‘A small part of me was suggesting that you wouldn’t be gratified to see me fall on my feet; but it’s too much to ask you to give me the benefit of the doubt, just once!’’

III) Expression: How would you describe the narrator, as a mother?
‘‘How can a mother disdain her own child like that?’’ I did think long…
Supposing she made up her mind to have the baby, she should have undertaken to provide her with unconditional love. Working up the strength to care for one's kid(s), falling all over oneself to show genuine interest in them is part of a parent’s job. Nevertheless, on some occasions, two individuals plainly cannot get along, or quite simply, aren’t meant to live together. Accordingly, do I condemn the narrator as a mother? Only if she hasn’t tried everything to make it work, I suppose.
100 words

Ready to correct

What I could offer Lisa wasn’t the conventional haven of maternal love and concern but my mind and my energy. If she hadn’t acquired that genetically then I was quite prepared to show her how to think and act. I was no good at kissing away tears and telling bedtime stories – any mother can do that : my uses were potentially far more significant.

She is proud, prideful, wilful, authoritarian, nonconformist.she loves his daughter and wants the best for her.but she is clumsy, too intransigeant, with a lack of tenderness and, diplomacy. She seeks a reflection of herself. She sees, her daughter like a poor substitut.Instead of blooming the own personality of her daughter,to put her in value, she imposes on she, her own point of view until she breaks her. This woman is neverthless lucid, but she won't recognise her wrongs. She does her best.In her mind it is just her daughter's fault. Also conflit between generations. 1. (Oh dear! Maxwell, that's torture! )
As they were threatened to be rejected, all was duly noted and kept a low profile by flattering the boss in order not to try the devil

Maxwell!
you looked like to have done decisive progress in this field ; but everyone now knows that you aren't the author ..... what an huge deception doubled by a profound nitterness

» « Hi hi ! C'est drôle ! »
Sandy spent her two or three camping days to lift her phone above her head to try to obtain the network ... ha ha ha .... that is funny!

A small part of myself lead me to believe that you would be happy to see me to fall back on my feet ;but if it is not asked you to much to give me the benefit of doubt, only once

And I sensed her disapproval. I have attracted disapproval all my life. Usually it leaves me indifferent, occasionally it delights me. But the disapproval of a child is oddly unsettling.

Elle commençait à me désespérer .
Habituellement cela me laissait indifférent, mais parfois cela me ravissait.
Penelope LIVELY, Moon Tiger, 1987.

III) Expression: How would you describe the narrator, as a mother? (No more than 100 words.).
Parents often want their children to be like them,to show them the best ways to cope with the difficulties of life, and to guide them in artistic and cultural activities .
Teenagers are often rebelling, that creates conflicts between parents and children.
the author describes a conflictual situation between Lisa and her mother and nowadays many family are in this case . The mother hasn't got a maternal fiber .she is a strong-willed woman . However, she is a well-educated person , she is clever and mindful and want the best for her daughter. Lisa does not share her mother's way of life. But, is her mother a bad mother ? I don't think so 104 words.

Dear Here4u thank you very much for your good test

III) Expression: How would you describe the narrator, as a mother? (No more than 100 words.)

The narrator is confessing her desire that the daughter has to become her alter ego .
She behaves towards the child in an unnatural and questionable way for a mother, hoping that the daughter had inherited her same dominant genes, which would theoretically allow her to succeed in reaching the purpose..
But, in spite of all her efforts. It does not happen, since the infant is growing up needing a tender maternal care, like the majority of children.
So, after the daughter grows older, she must recognize her failure and resigns herself to being round down by the girl forever more.99
Thanking you a lot for, also for the sad story,
I hope you have a great weekend.

So long.

Hello Here4u,

I - Into English :
- Threatened to be sent packing everyone had been warned and kept a low profile, buttering up this boss not to tempt fate
- You seemed to have shown great improvements in that field but now, everyone knows you haven’t done it yourself. How both disappointing and bitter it is !
- Sandy spent her first couple of days at the campsite lifting up her mobile above her head to try to get some network. Ha ha ! That’s funny !
- A small part of myself let me think you’d be happy to see me land back on my feet but it seems too much to ask you to give me the benefice of the doubt just for once

Elle me décevait beaucoup.

III) Expression:
Since everybody seems to heap criticism on that narcissistic mother, I will plead her cause. She looks like a beautiful and independant woman certainly not ready to have a child. I suppose the birth of her daughter was not expected but that happened and she might be alone to raise her. She seems to do her best to get on with her. She may do that awkwardly but deep down herself she loves her and with the time everything will sort itself out.

Once more very hard to put the text in French.. but I tried my best…
All the best - Have a nice Sunday

Ex 156/ in pouring rain, or stormy wind.. FINISHED.
Message de here4u posté le 13-05-2019 à 13:49:03 (S | E | F) Jeudi 30 mai.
Hello my dear Here4u and Maxwell ! Thanks, yes, it was such a tricky exercise, but I ‘ve been taught a lot ! Maxwell had shrewdly combined difficulties, for my greater pleasure ! Maxwell ! I Do love when I rack my brain, and so happy when my work had been well done, I can have a long rest, being at peace with myself because I‘ve given my very best ! Great work to both of you!

I give you THE FORCE, and you'll give me your best, as ever.

I)Translate into English:
Being threatened with dismissal and get the bum’s rush, all of them were taken it as read, and kept a low profile they were buttering up to that manager not to tempt fate.

Maxwell!
You seemed to have made decisive progress in this field, but every one knows henceforth, that you weren’t the originator in any way… What a huge disappointment, as well as it is a deep resentment !

» « Hi hi ! C’est drôle ! »
Sandy spent her couple first days by going camping, and she was lifting her cell phone up above her head, to get some telephone network. “Hi, hi ! It is funny !”

4. « A small part of me led me to believe that you would be happy to see me falling on my feet; but that is too much your expecting for giving me the benefit of the doubt, just for a single time!

Elle me décevait.
Penelope LIVELY, Moon Tiger, 1987.

III) Expression: How would you describe the narrator, as a mother? (No more than 100 words.)

On the contrary about what is said in this passage, I think Penelope was a great mother for her children. As she wrote a lot of novels for childhood, she was nearer than she said in “Moon Tiger”.
Writers enjoy creating all sort of heroes who seems to be very far from them. Otherwise, all these inventions are a part of their writers, but are living in a fiction life.
To give an account about something, we must know it, at least, just a little, if we don’t, readers won’t agree with you nor believe what they read. 100 words.

Have a very sweet and a positive week. Here is the force back to you, Here4u !
See you soon.

Hello, Dear Friends,

Bravo, BRAVO, donc ! Votre travail me ravit !

I)Translate into English:

(Oh dear ! Maxwell, that’s torture !)
Threatened to be taken down a peg, they had all taken it as read and kept a low profile, buttering up the boss so as not to tempt fate.

- se faire renvoyer dans leurs 22 = Du rugby où la ligne des 22 mètres est la dernière avant les buts.= take someone down a peg (or two)/ take someone down a notch (or two)/ knock someone down a peg (or two)= to reprimand someone who is acting too arrogant. Lien internet
send someone packing/
- Tous se l'étaient tenus pour dit = They had all taken it as read/ taken it for granted/
- faire profil bas : keep a low profile / lie low/ keep your head down/
- brosser dans le sens du poil : rub up the right way/ butter up / scratch one’s back
- pour ne pas : in order not to / so as not to
- tenter le diable : to tempt fate/ court disaster/ to play with fire/ poke the bear/

You seemed to have made significant progress in that field, but now, everybody knows that you hadn’t done it yourself... It’s such a huge disappointment and deep bitterness…

- faire des progrès : to make progress/ Attention ! progress= est indénombrable singulier. Lien internet

- une déception : a disappointment ; « deception »= FAUX AMI= tromperie.

» « Hi hi ! C’est drôle ! »
Sandy’s passed the first couple of days of camping with her cell-phone over her head to try to get reception. Haha! That’s funny!

- Sandy a passé : bilan d’une action passée = present perfect = has passed/ has spent/

- a couple of= a few= two or three…
- avoir du réseau : to get reception/

A small part of me let me think that you’d be very happy that I landed on my feet but that’s too much to ask for you to give me the benefit of the doubt. Even only once…

- retomber sur mes pieds : to land on one’s feet/
- Si vous utilisez « to see » + base verbale, il y a deux possibilités : «to see me land », vous avez vu tout le processus. «To see me landing»: seule une partie de l’action a été vue dans son déroulement.
- c’est trop te demander : that’s too much to ask
- the benefit of the doubt ( bien mettre les DEUX déterminants).

And I sensed her disapproval. I have attracted disapproval all my life. Usually it leaves me indifferent, occasionally it delights me. But the disapproval of a child is oddly unsettling.

Penelope LIVELY, Moon Tiger, 1987.

D’habitude, cela me laisse indifférente, parfois cela me ravit.

- to delight= ravir/ enchanter/ réjouir/

Hello Here4U
Sorry to be late, I haven't had much time and the exercises were longer and more difficult, which means, even more interesting than ever!
I)Translate into English:

Threatened into being put in their places, all got the message(*) and kept a low profile, rubbing this manager the right way so as not to tempt fate.
(*) or: were warned

You seemed to have made a breakthrough in this area but the word is out that you were in no way responsible for it... What a huge disappointment coupled with(*) a deep bitterness!
(*) or: as well as

» « Hi hi ! C'est drôle ! »
"Sandy spent her first couple of days of camping raising her mobile phone overhead to try and get a signal." "Heh heh! That's funny!"

A small part of me led me to believe that you'd be glad to see me get back on my feet ; but giving me the benefit of the doubt just once is too much to ask, isn't it?

III) Expression: How would you describe the narrator, as a mother? (No more than 100 words.)
Lisa's mother is an atypical one. She doesn't seem to be the loving kind. Unlike most mothers, it looks as though she can't talk to her daughter with her heart to comfort her, or spend some precious time with her, or share feminine hobbies.
She would rather assume the role of a father, teaching her daughter about life, what's useful in life, and making her grow up, developping her intellect side. (76)
