Message de here4u posté le 30-07-2019 à 16:08:04 (S | E | F)
Hello, Dearest Friends,
Here is the following exercise... posted in difficult conditions... I hope you'll like the translations, anyway... The translation into French is not so easy...

I)Translate into English:
» « Hum… Pas sûr que tu le saches vraiment ! »

II)Translate into French:
She hurried along, head down, shoulders thrust forward, and when the strip of pavement at the side of the road narrowed to six inches she had to climb over the guardrail and plough through the brush.
Sweat stung her eyes. Burrs and thorns and the smooth hard daggers of the foxtails bit into every step. She couldn’t see where she was going. She worried about snakes, spiders, turning her ankle in a ditch. And then the cars began to switch on their lights and she was alone on a terrible howling stage, caught there for everyone to see. Her clothes were soaked through by the time the entrance to the path came into sight, and she ran the last hundred yards, ran for the cover of the brush while the cold beams of light hunted her down, and she had to crouch there in the bushes till her breath came back to her.
The shadow deepened. Birds called to one another. Swish, swish, swish, the cars shot by, no more than ten feet away. Any one of them could stop, any one. She listened to the cars and to the air rasping through her lips, to the hiss of the tires and the metallic whine of the engines straining against the grade. It went on for a long time, forever, and the sky grew darker.
T. C. BOYLE, The Tortilla Curtain.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, (you CANNOT change the nature of the words!) and the suitable punctuation, search your minds, think hard and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE.
You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively! PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THESE WORDS!
FREEDOM!
Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- (to) HURRY - (to) HOWL – An ENTRANCE – a COVER – SMOOTH – ALONE– TILL – WHILE- + pronom réciproque ... Lien internet
... Of course, I give you THE FORCE... while you give me your BEST!
Go for it! I send you a lot of sun and wonderful landscapes to admire... together with the coolness of the pool...

Hello! It's been ages since I haven't tried to do one of these exercises... SO IT'S NOW OR NEVER
I'm going to do my best, of course... Hoping I won't make a lot of mistakes, which would give teacher here4u more work for her vacation...!

I)Translate into English:
I had believed all would go back to normal in no time at all, but it was badly knowing them. I've suffered in silence so far, but it will rapidly turn sour... The reality has to be faced: that's not the point! I'm left disappointed....

It went wrong the two last times, I will take benefit from my 14-o'clock intervention to set the record straight...

Stop asking questions whose answers you don't want to hear!

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:

She was ALONE, lost, wrapped in that SMOOTH COVER and crying out, HOWLING like a wolf, when I found her at the ENTRANCE of my building WHILE I was HURRYING up not to miss the last episode of my favorite series; we hugged EACH OTHER and I took her to my home TILL the arrival of the police.

I hope there is sense to be found in that sentence

See you! and thanks for these exercises that allow us to progress!

Hello Here4U
Thanks a lot! That was not easy at all except for playing with words, as usual (that's my cup of tea)

III) Playing with words :
WHILE you'll be HOWLING to divert attention, I'll gain ENTRANCE to that building ALONE, use my COVER identiy as a journalist, then HURRY up TILL our agent and I meet EACH OTHER to get his tip in a SMOOTH way. (42)

I'd been thinking that everything would go back to normal in no time but I certainly did not know them. Up to now, I've been grinning and bearing it but things are about to turn sour... We must face the facts: it doesn't add up! I'm left hungry for more.

I have thought that everything would be back in order in two phases and three moves, but I misjudged. So I decided to wait patiently , but it will turn sour quickly. I must face the facts: It’s not good enough! I’m disappointed….

She hurried along, head down, shoulders thrust forward, and when the strip of pavement at the side of the road narrowed to six inches she had to climb over the guardrail and plough through the brush.
Sweat stung her eyes. Burrs and thorns and the smooth hard daggersof the foxtails bit into every step.
Any one of them could stop, anyone. She listened to the cars and to the air rasping through her lips, to the hiss of the tires and the metallic whine of the engines straining against the grade. It went on for a long time, forever, and the sky grew darker.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
Using the 2 verbs, 2 adjectives, 2 nouns and 2 link words, create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE ( moins de 50 sans dépasser 60-65 mots.)
FREEDOM!
Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- (to) HURRY - (to) HOWL – An ENTRANCE – a COVER – SMOOTH – ALONE– TILL – WHILE- + each other (2), one another(+2)

A baby was HOWLING in a rainy day, WHILE his mother HURRIED to swaddle him in a COVER, she shook her bottle of milk UNTIL it becomes SMOOTH, at the ENTRANCE of the post office where she sat down ALONE looking at EACH OTHER as he was fed. (48 words).

Of course, I give you THE FORCE... while you give me your BEST!
Go for it! I send you a lot of sun and wonderful landscapes to admire... together with the coolness of the pool...
Have a very sweet week !
See you soon.

Hello Here4u (if not too late)

I – In English

I’d thought everything would go back to normal in no time but that was not knowing them. Up to now I’ve made the best of it but it’s going to turn sour.. You must face the facts : it does not add up ! I’m hungry for more…

Maxwell.

It went off badly the two last times I’ll take advantage of my 2 o’clock speech to set the record straight

Stop asking questions whose answers you don’t want to hear

» « Hum… Pas sûr que tu le saches vraiment ! »

What are you going to warn me about her ? Tell me what you think of her. Dad has already given a telling-off. I know who she is and what I got into ! Hem, not sure you really know !

Not much concentration on that one. I hope it's not too bad ..

Re:

1. I (had) thought everything would get back to normal in no time at all, but I certainly didn't know them so well. So far, I've been grinning and bearing it, but things will go sour? One must recognise that we haven't achieved the right balance. I'm left disappointed/unsatisfied?

2. It went wrong the last two times, I'll take (advantage of) my 2 p.m contribution to set the record straight.

3. Stop asking questions you don't want the answers to !

4. « What are you going to caution me about him ? Tell me what you think of it? Dad already hauled me over the coals? I know who he is and what I got myself mixed up in ! » « Hmm? Not sure you really do ! »

Hello!

I)Translate into English:

I had thought everything would be back to normal in no time, but that was knowing nothing about them. So far, I’ve suffered in silence/ did grin and bear it/ but that’ll soon grow sour… You must be realistic, it’s not good enough! I’m still craving for more!

- rentrer dans l'ordre = to go back to normal/ get back to normal...
- deux temps, trois mouvements = in no time at all/ in a jiffy/ in a flash/ [in two shakes of a lamb's tail...]
- prendre son mal en patience = suffer in silence / grin and bear it/
- tourner au vinaigre = turn to/ into vinegar/ turn sour/ go sour/ go acrimonous/
- rester sur sa faim = to be left disappointed/ be left hungry with more/
- se rendre à l’évidence = face reality/ face the facts/ be realistic/

It has gone badly the last two times. I’ll take advantage of my 2 pm talk to set things straight.

- mal se passer = to go wrong/ to go badly/
Lien internet
Lien internet

- remettre les pendules à l’heure = get a few facts straight/ set the records straight/

Stop asking questions you don’t want (the) answers to.

» « Hum… Pas sûr que tu le saches vraiment ! »
What ‘s the kind of warning against him ? Tell me what you’re thinking… I’ve already had an earful with my Dad. I already know who he is and what I got myself into… » « Yeah ? I’m not sure you do ! »

- mettre en garde = to warn against/ caution against/ alert against/
- passer un savon = bawl someone out/ give sb a good telling off/ give a good dressing down/ haul over the coals/ give sb an earful/ give an ear bashing/ dress down/give a roasting / give a tongue-lashing / keelhaul/ read the riot act/ drag over the coals/ give a rocket/ rollicking/

T. C. BOYLE, The Tortilla Curtain.

III) PLAYING and WORKING WITH WORDS:
Voici les éléments imposés cette fois :
- (to) HURRY - (to) HOWL – An ENTRANCE – a COVER – SMOOTH – ALONE– TILL – WHILE- + adjectif réciproque

A revoir …

- Dear beloved
No need to HURRY, I will wait for you TILL seven and take COVER at the church ENTRANCE; I will be ALONE, and after your arrival we will have a SMOOTH discussion (EACH OTHER) about our love; I will HOWL in pain if you can't come and WHILE you are on your way you will be in my thoughts all the time…

- I walked for a walk ALONE with my German shepherd dog at the ENTRANCE of the wood; WHILE it was hidden in the COVER of a thicket, a man appeared... we exchanged (EACH OTHER) a quick glance ; his was not SMOOTH, indeed threatening; frightened, I HOWLED the name of my dog UNTIL it HURRIEd UP to get back ; the man, rushed away when he saw it. 66 words

- I'm missing the touch of your SMOOTH hand,
Before remaining ALONE,
I would like to keep this hand in one of mine,
Exchanging a smile,
Looking at EACH OTHER in our eyes,
For a WHILE,
There is no reason to HURRY,
Gaining the ENTRANCE,
Not TILL the train be on its rail;
Stay under the COVER of the night ;
No matter if they HOWL with laughter,
Nearby. 64

- WHILE you'll be HOWLING to divert attention, I'll gain ENTRANCE to that building ALONE, use my COVER identiy as a journalist, then HURRY up TILL our agent and I meet (EACH OTHER) to get his tip in a SMOOTH way. (42)

- She was ALONE, lost, wrapped in that SMOOTH COVER and crying out, HOWLING like a wolf, when I found her at the ENTRANCE of my building WHILE I was HURRYING up not to miss the last episode of my favorite series; we hugged EACH OTHER and I took her to my home TILL the arrival of the police.

- A baby was HOWLING on a rainy day, WHILE his mother HURRIED to swaddle him in a COVER; she shook his bottle UNTIL the milk became SMOOTH; at the ENTRANCE of the post office, she sat down ALONE with her baby, looking at EACH OTHER, as he was fed. (48 words).
