Oral Bac /Spaces and exchange
Message de rossignol030 posté le 22-05-2019 à 16:21:20 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,

I’m going to talk about the notion “Spaces and Exchanges”. To begin with, I would like to define these two words. A space is a geographical areas that societies occupy and an exchange is interactions between men and different societies, the act of giving or receiving something in substitution for something else. The word exchange can take different forms: economic, cultural, movement of people. Thereby, travelling is different for each person since the goal isn’t always the same. We may answer the following question: does travelling mean the same thing to everyone? As a starting point, I am going to deal with the photograph of British sailor Elle MacArthur published in 2002, then I am going to focus on the email “Summer job application”, and finally I am going to talk about the text “Passion for Travel”.

In a first part, the photograph of British sailor Elle MacArthur shows us her travel across the ocean in order to win a race. First of all, Elle MacArthur is a British sailor who broke the world tour record for solo sailing in 2005 and this same year she was knighted by the Queen and she has also received the Legion of Honour from Chirac. In the photo, she sails to the finish line to win the 2002 Route du Rhum race off Guadeloupe. The Route du Rhum is a solo transatlantic sailing race, run every four years, at the end of October at the beginning of November, between Saint-Malo and Guadeloupe. In the photo, we can see a sailing-boat with a young woman steering it. During this race, she probably faced difficulties: for instance the weather with heavy rain, tornadoes, rough waves and lack of sleep. Besides, she was alone during these hardships but it allowed her to overcome her limits. In addition, despite all the obstacles she won the race and she broke the world record as the fastest solo: it shows that she is a professional and an adventurer. Then, she was there for a charitable cause too: she heads many foundations dealing with sick children and the environment. She has achieved her goal since she is an achiever. Therefore, she travels in order to help many her foundations and to win races.
Over a second phase, some people choose to travel to work as Sean Dunn does. Indeed, Sean writes a cover letter to Ms Jones, who is probably the head of the charity and the one who hires the staff, in order to work as a volunteer with a charity which they work on the environment and social issues. First of all, Sean is probably in his 20s, he is a second-year university student and he is experienced in humanitarian work since he has worked as a volunteer for Oxfam in Africa during his gap year. He wants both to gain experience and use his. He is determined to be helpful and fight against injustice. Therefore, for Sean travel mean both share his experience with people in need thanks to his knowledges, which is a kind of exchange, and interact with other communities, space here is a tool for exchange. He want to help countries to be more economically independent and he hopes that he helps for can change injustice around the world.
Finally, the text “Passion for Travel” shows us the enthusiasm of young people for travel. Firstly, the passion for travel is nothing new. Indeed, in the 18th century, British students from Oxford and Cambridge, as well as aristocrats used to travel to Southern Europe, looking for culture, romance and knowledge. Nowadays, people from all kinds of social backgrounds are involved. They go to the same places but activities are wilder. They want to have fun, maybe binge smoking, drug-taking and casual sex for sure. For example, they travel in Ibiza or other cities where sun, party and promiscuity are gathered in one place. Despite everything, they have kept the cultural interest. Next, whether it was at the time or today, travel is constantly recorded. At the time, people recorded their trips through letters and today it is thanks to social networks that every trip, event can be recorded. Some even create blogs as to preserve memories of their travels but also to make it live to others.

To conclude, the purpose of travelling is different for each person. While some travel for work or study, others travel to celebrate or discover news horizons. However, travelling always allows to grow as we gained experience through our trips. Moreover, they can also bring us knowledge through the discovery of different cultures. In my view, travelling also allows us to find our inner self, to be in harmony with ourselves and to discover our limits.
