Message from mohammad51 posted on 10-03-2020 at 21:14:35 (D | E | F)
Hello
I got this exercise online, please help
Name the subject and the predicate in each of the following sentences
Thanks for any reply.

1. Such was not the effect produced on the sanguine spirit of the general.
I think the effect = subject \ produced on the sanguine spirit of the general = the predict

2. What a contrast did these children of southern Europe present to the Anglo-Saxon races!
I know this is an exclamation sentence and the full subject is:
( children of southern Europe) and the predicate is ( a contrast did to he Anglo-Saxon races)

3. What must have been the emotions of the Spaniards!
This is also exclamation sentence The emotion is the subject
must have been = the predicate

4. Hence originated their contempt for terrestrial distinctions.
their contempt.... = the subject \ originated hence = the predicate
---
Please correct me, if there have been mistakes in my answers.
Notice : I noticed that Towson University considers only the verb is the predicate.

Hello
This I think I solved, however, any one can add to the content

First of all, if it is confusing to identify the subject, we can follow this method:

1- isolate the verb 2 - asking a question so that to determine the subject using who or what and replacing

---

1. Such was not the effect produced on the sanguine spirit of the general.
was not produced = the verb \ passive
analyzing : such effect we tell about was not the effect produced ......
the effect = the subject
was not produced on the sanguine spirit of the general = the predicate

2. What a contrast did these children of southern Europe present to the Anglo-Saxon races!
exclamation sentence present = main verb
these children of southern Europe = the subject
did present a contrast to the Anglo-Saxon races1 = the predicate

3. What must have been the emotions of the Spaniards!
the emotion of the Spaniards = the subject ... must have been = the predicate

4. Hence originated their contempt for terrestrial distinctions.
their contempt for terrestrial distinctions = the subject
originated hence = the predicate
