Could you translate the following sentences.

1. Il y a tellement de circulation!
2. Elle est partie il y a 10 minutes.
3. Il y a combien d'enfants?
4. Il y a longtemps qu'elle travaille ici.
5. Il y a des gens qui croient aux fantômes.
6. Il y a ta sœur qui t'attend.
7. Est-ce qu'il y a des questions?

Et voilà, le fameux problème avec it is or it has been !!!!! Quick, my special note book !
8. Il y a 5 ans qu'elle ne lui a pas écrit.
It has been 5 years since she wrote to him (her)
9. Il y a 3 ans que nous avons divorcé.
It's 3 years since we got divorced.
10. Il y a quelqu'un qui frappe à la porte.
There is someone who is knocking at the door.

A tous les participants.

Il y a de très bonnes productions mais j'attends encore un peu avant de vous donner la correction.

Quelques conseils pour revoir sa copie
Ago renvoie à un action passée, donc le prétérit!
le présent perfect avec for ou since est utilisé pour des actions qui ont débuté dans le passé et qui continuent d'être vraies au moment présent.

Correction:
Quelques rappels utiles:

a) Il y a = there is + singulier / there are + pluriel quand on parle de ce qui existe dans un endroit.
ex: there are three books on the table. (il y a 3 livres sur la table)

b) Il y a + une expression de temps pour parler d'une action qui a eu lieu dans le passé sans aucun rapport avec le présent.
ex: I went to London 3 years ago.( Je suis allé à Londres il y a 3 ans)

c) Il y a ... que... se traduit en anglais par un present perfect + for + durée si l'action dure encore au moment présent
ex: I've been learning English for 3 years. (J'apprends l'anglais depuis 3 ans)

ou par it's.....since + prétérit
ex: it's 2 weeks since I saw him. (Il y a 2 semaines que je ne l'ai pas vu)
Attention verbe affirmatif en anglais, négatif en français.

d) Il y a .... qui....ne se traduit pas par there is/are ... who
avec un sujet bien défini.
ex: Your dog is in the street. (il y a ton chien qui est dans la rue)
Pour les sujets imprécis on peut utiliser someone ou some...
Someone has just phoned. (Quelqu'un a téléphoné)
